Captains report on Finals day

On Sunday, 23rd August members of Horsham Park Bowls Club assembled to watch the culmination of the season's competitions on Finals Day. It was overcast but the two matches scheduled for the morning began promptly. Unfortunately the rain started after about half an hour's play and continued for the rest of the morning.

The 101 Competition was the 'Battle of the Johns' with John Philpott playing John Leadbeater. This was a closely fought game with John Philpott clinching the title on the nineteenth end resulting in a win by 103 shots to 97.

The Drawn Pairs Competition was between Frank Thomas and Vic Pratt and opponents Harry Smith and Alan Langford. Harry and Vic won the competition last year so one was destined to keep his title for another year whilst the other would be disappointed. Frank and Vic went into an early lead and the score was 12 - 6 after twelve ends of this 18 ends competition. Harry and Alan scored 4 shots on the thirteenth end which completely changed the game as they went on to win the remaining four ends and the match by 15 shots to 12.

The standard of play was amazingly good considering the conditions and was appreciated by the many spectators.

The decision was taken to postpone the remaining matches until the following weekend. If you are in the park on Sunday, 30th August you are welcome to come in and watch the remaining finals. Play will start at 10 o'clock.

Horsham Park continued their Finals matches on Sunday 30th August following on from where they left off the previous weekend when rain brought the proceedings to a premature halt. Play started at 10 a.m. with a crowd of club members and others there to support and encourage the players. Harry Smith and Frank Thomas faced each other in the Men's Singles. It was an exciting game with the lead changing a couple of times in the early stages. On the 12th end the score was level but then Frank gradually pulled ahead winning the game 21 shots to 13. The Ladies' Singles was played at the same time between Norma Covey and Brenda Thompson. Brenda went ahead and was 14 - 4 up after the 10th end but then Norma fought back and gradually closed the gap to 15 - 18 with Brenda being stuck on 18 shots for seven ends before eventually taking victory at 21 - 15.  The Yard Stick Singles, with each contestant playing with just two woods each, was contested by Frank Heath and John Philpott. John got his eye in quickly and lead all the way winning by 10 shots to 3 on the 18th end. The afternoon session commenced with the final of the Jackson Trophy, a competition for members who have not won a singles competition in the last three years. Alan Langford played Bryony Wood in a closely fought game with Alan managing to stay ahead by a few shots all the way to the 22nd end when Bryony drew level; from then on it was a battle to see who could get to 21 shots first. Bryony succeeded on the 29th end winning 22 shots to 17. Vic Pratt and Frank Heath played each other in the Handicap Singles with the score starting at 4 - 0 in favour of Vic. Frank caught up and overtook Vic on the 6th end and a close fight developed until Frank managed to stretch his lead and win 22 - 13. The final and highlight of the day's events was the Champion of Champions Match between the newly crowned Ladies' and Men's Champions. Brenda Thompson faced Frank Thomas to compete for this ultimate honour to become Club Champion. The game started slowly and the scoring was pegged to only one shot on most ends. At the tenth end Brenda was leading 11 - 2. Frank fought back and after scoring a four on the 14th end was only two shots behind. Then it was Brenda's turn to pull ahead again and at the 20th end she was 20 -11 up and only needed one shot to clinch the victory. Frank wasn't going to let that happen! He won the next four ends bringing the score to 20 - 19 in favour of Brenda. On the next end Frank played well and was holding 3 shots when Brenda came in with her last bowl, knocking her own wood in to take the shot, the match and the title! The spectators could not have wished for a more exciting and entertaining end to the day.
